SOBRE NÓS

Who We Are

Established in 1977, our mission and vision are to have a suicide free Rhode Island. We also envision The Samaritans as the “agency of choice” for individuals, families and other community stakeholders who seek information relating to suicide prevention, grief, support and information.

We hold the conviction that individuals of any age should not be ostracized due to the stigma associated with suicide or medical and behavioral health challenges. Our commitment is steadfast – to support Rhode Islanders and all those who may feel despondent, isolated, or suicidal, including caregivers and individuals bereaved by suicide. At The Samaritans, everyone is included and supported.

We understand the needs and experiences of Rhode Islanders

We recognize the difficulties in accessing medical and behavioral health care in Rhode Island and across the nation.

Through the experiences of our volunteer doctors and nurses, as well as feedback from our callers, families and friends, we recognized the crucial role of The Samaritans' Listening Line. Our service becomes especially vital when, for various reasons, professional services are inaccessible.

We provide anonymous, free, universal, lifetime support that is not contingent on diagnosis, medical/behavioral health status, third-party reimbursements, or financial capability.

For numerous callers, The Samaritans represents the only available option for care.

We understand the diversity of need across our state.

In collaboration with RI Emergency 911 and state and municipal healthcare officials, we have formulated training protocols that incorporate telephone and web referrals, showcasing our specialized understanding of the state's resources.
