Description of the Safe Place Program
The Samaritans' Safe Place program, established in 1981, is Rhode Island’s longest-running free, nonjudgmental, friendship-based support group for adults (18 years or older) who have lost a family member or friend to suicide.
Regrettably, we cannot assist children and recommend discussing care options with your child’s pediatrician.
Safe Place operates as a peer-to-peer model, led by our experienced volunteers.
Safe Place is a free, weekly, drop-in program with no pre-registration needed - exclusively and only for adults who have lost a loved one or friend to suicide. Please respect our program model. No exceptions.
The meetings are held at the First Unitarian Church Community Center at One Benevolent Street (at the corner of Benefit and Benevolent Streets, opposite the Hope Club) in Providence. Parking is available in the church's lot on Benefit Street, as well as on-street parking.
Safe Place convenes every Tuesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., except on holidays, during major weather events, or when the church is otherwise closed.
Should no participants arrive by 7:00 pm, our volunteer facilitators may depart.
Please note that Safe Place is not a substitute for professional care, whether medical, behavioral, or pastoral, and we urge you to inform your primary care provider of your participation.
