  • For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide. A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general population.
  • Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds.
  • 77% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.


Every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind.

In The United States

  • Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. It was responsible for over 48,000 deaths in 2021. 
  • In 2021, an estimated 12.3 million adults seriously thought about suicide, 3.5 million made a plan, and 1.7 million attempted suicide.
  • Suicide rates in 2021 were 36% higher than in 2000.


According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC), suicide is a serious public health problem that can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities.
